CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) celebrated the World Water Day on 22nd March, 2018 in the NEERI Auditorium. According to this year’s theme of World Water Day 2018 – ‘Nature for Water’, the eminent water scientists deliberated various issues to overcome the water challenges. Shri P.K. Parchure, Regional Director, Central Ground Water Board, Nagpur and Ex. Senior Scientist of CSIR-NEERI Dr. R. Paramasivam were the Chief Guests on this occasion. Director, CSIR-NEERI Dr. Rakesh Kumar; Dr. H.J. Purohit, Chief Scientist, CSIR-NEERI; Dr. Pawan Kumar Labhasetwar, Head, Water Technology & Management Division, CSIR-NEERI; and Dr. S.P. Andey, Sr. Principal Scientist were also present on this occasion.

Addressing the audience, Shri Parchure expressed concern over deteriorating quality of ground water and declining ground water level. He said that ground water management is a big challenge. He also briefed about National Water Policy and aquifer mapping and management. In his inaugural address, Dr. Rakesh Kumar said that loss of moisture in soil and air is a major concern. The scientists should start writing policies on water, he added. Dr. Paramsivam briefed about the provision of safe drinking water through technology interventions in affected habitations.

Dr. P.K. Jain highlighted emerging trends in groundwater management.  Dr. Madan Nanoti spoke on water quality problems and appropriate intervention options. Dr. Sharad Rode stated that there is a need to effectively implement drinking water programme in Maharashtra. Er. Deepak Dhote presented a case study of Umari Village to illuminate water security in rural India. Dr. G.K Khadse conducted the proceedings and Dr. Pranav Nagarnaik proposed the vote of thanks.

Various events were organized on this occasion for the students to attract them for building a career in the water sector, including skit and short film competitions. The winners were given away prizes.
