Nagpur : Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has conducted its 30th Convocation on 13th April 2017 by awarding degrees/diplomas to 2,10,811 students. To help its students spread across the Country, it was held through Technology Mediated Web Convocation at 56 Regional Centers including Nagpur. In this, the students have option to attend the Convocation nearest to their place of stay. Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey, Hon’ble Minister of State for HRD (Higher Education), Government of India delivered the Convocation address at the main function at IGNOU New Delhi. Prof. Ravindra Kumar, Vice Chancellor of IGNOU presented the Vice Chancellor Report.

At Nagpur the Convocation was held at Guru Nanak Bhavan, RTM Nagpur University. From Nagpur a total of 1517 students were eligible for receiving their Degrees and Diplomas out of which 283 students were invited in person. 882 B.Ed. students will be sent their Certificates by Speed Post. Dr. S. P. Kane, Vice Chancellor, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University was the Guest of Honour at Nagpur venue and delivered Regional Convocation address. One student of this region Mrs. Gunja Sanjay Joshi, received the University Gold Medal for her PG Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, as she stood all India first for this program.

The Gold medal was awarded at New Delhi.  Specialty of this Convocation at Nagpur is – 3 prisoners including 1 facing death penalty were due for BA and MA degree. Due to Security reasons, they could not attend in Person at the Convocation venue. Five students are above 60 years, thereby reinforcing the concept of “lifelong learning”. It is also glad to note that more than 50 students from Gadchiroli received their Post Graduation Certificates which include MA English, MA Political Science, MA Public Administration, MA Hindi. Dr. P. Sivaswaroop, Regional Director, IGNOU Nagpur in his Report enlisted various activities of the RC in “REACHING THE UNREACHED”. He said that IGNOU Nagpur is actively spreading the digital transaction among the students including those in tribal areas and making them “e-Kranti Volunters”.

He also informed that IGNOU will be opening Special Study Centre especially for tribals at Kurkheda. Dr. S. P. Kane in his Regional Convocation address congratulated the awardees. He said that in the old Gurukul System students at the Convocation were advised “Satyam Vada”, “Dharmam Chara”, “Swadhyayan-ma Pramada” which means always speak truth, always practice dharma and one should constantly do self study and self training. In today’s age of liberalization, privatization and globalization, he advised the students to be more sensible and more humane. He strongly favored provision of equal opportunity for education to all section of the society.

The program was well attended by dignitaries like Dr. R. P. Thakre, Dr. S. I. Koreti, Dr. Swarnakar, Shri. Chandrapal Chouksey, Shri. Angad Gavhane etc. The program was conducted by Mrs. Mohatasham Imran and Ms. Kalpana Bhujade and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. S. B. Zade. All the Regional Centre staff including Dr. Vikas Singhal, Assistant Regional Director, Mr. Y. S. Bhambhulkar, Joint Registrar and others have put in efforts to make this functions a great success.
