The decision to levy a full 5 percent GST on food items in all the hotels of the state has been taken and the new tariff will be applicable from November 15. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Girish Bapat told reporters in the ministry that on Tuesday, strict action will be taken against those who have cheated the hotel customers more money.

Customers will have to pay a tariff by quoting rates in the hotel. Battat said that strict action would be taken against those hoteliers who violate these rules. The central government has made a new agreement with GST.

There was VAT before the GST was implemented. Hotel tariffs are with VAT. After the GST was implemented, the hotel drivers had to apply the new rates without VAT. But many did not do that. The previous rate was more billed as GST. Now the government has decided to introduce 5 percent GST in the hotel. This means that the hotelmakers will have to print a new tariff except pre-existing VAT. This tariff must be printed. Hand written rates will not work anymore. It will be mandatory to implement this new rate from November 15, he said.

It will also be mandatory to write a GST number on the front of the hotel. Bapat also warned that punitive action will be taken against those who do not reduce the rates.
