Gurudwara

In the year 1927, some 6-7 Sikh families arrived settled down in Nagpur. At that time there was no Gurudwara in Nagpur where these families could go and pray or perform their religious duties. For this purpose, under the leadership of Nirmal Tejsinghji, who was a Railway Engineer, the work on a Gurudwara in the 'Punjabi Line' area started. As more and more Sikh families arrived, the Gurudwara was Renovated in the year 1932. And once again in the year 2000, the Gurudwara was renovated and expanded to become what it is today, by the name of 'Gurudwara  Shri Guru Singh Sabha'.
In Sikh Religion there are five places of importance, called the five 'Takht(s)', namely : 1. Shri Akal Takht Saheb, Amritsar (Punjab). 2. Takht Shri Keshgarh Saheb, Anandpur (Punjab). 3. Takht Shri Dam Dama Saheb. Talkhandi Sabo Bhatinda (Punjab). 4. Takht Shri Patna Saheb, Patna (Bihar). 5. Takht Shri Sach Khand Hajoor Saheb, Nanded (Maharashtra). These Takht are the places from where religious ordinances are issued to the Sikh community worldwide, and no Sikh can ever refuse to follow these orders. The fifth Takht that is 'Takht Shri Sach Khand Hajoor Saheb' is situated in Nanded, which is very near to Nagpur.

This is the place where the Tenth Sikh Guru, Shri Gobind Singh Ji got the title of 'Guru'. This place is a famous pilgrimage but in earlier days (before and during the 1947 turmoil), there weren't enough resources for people to easily visit this place. From that time and until recently, the Gurudwara Committee used to arrange a regular bus service for the pilgrims. There are two chaukis (intervals) for praying and bhajan-keertan. First one scheduled from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and second from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM everyday.

Every Sunday, there is a 'Khula bhandara' (meaning 'Open for all') in the Gurudwara where around 2,000-2,500 people are served unlimited food free of cost. The Gurudwara Commitee started a free of cost 'Shav Vahan' (Hearse) facility for the poor regardless of their religion or race. A Govt. Recognised School run by the Gurudwara Management Committee has been opened right infront of the Gurudwara, known as 'Shri Guru Gobind Singh Educational Institute'.  A small hospital, with Pathology Lab for free medicine for the poor. The Gurudwara also provides funds without interest to those can't afford, for causes like marriages, irrespective of their religious background, etc.
